If you see something bright streaking through the sky tonight, it’s not Santa on a test run. The celestial show is likely a part of the Ursids meteor shower.
The shower is set to peak overnight tonight from late Sunday, Dec. 22 into the morning hours of Monday, Dec. 23.
According to NASA, the Ursids get their name because the meteors appear to originate from the constellation Ursa Minor, or the Little Bear. The best way to see them is to look north. The shooting stars will appear to be coming from the area around the Little Dipper, producing as many as 12 or so meteors per hour on a peak year.
Don’t just concentrate on the Little Dipper, however. Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark and take in as much of the dark sky as possible for your best chance to see streaking lights.
Your best viewing time will be in the pre-dawn hours.
The meteors are the result of cosmic dust shed by Comet 8P/Tuttle, which, according to Space.com, orbits the sun once every 13.6 year and is not due to return until August 2020.
Best ways to see Ursids
To view the Ursids – or any other meteor shower - find a spot well away from city or street lights. It’s December, so come prepared for the cold. Lie flat on your back with your feet facing south and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible. Give your eyes about 30 minutes to adapt to the dark.
